I love, love, love the new ideas for the SEC to place 4 teams into the CFP based on SEC driven play in tournament. I particularly like the regular season 1 vs 2 both getting bids along with the winner of 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. Higher ranked teams get home field. This plan increases each team’s opportunity based off on field performance, offsets the impact of a tougher SEC schedule, and eliminates CFP committee bias / drama.
This could totally be done in the future. I Remember starting 2026, the CFP format doesn’t require unanimous consensus; the big 10 and SEC will dictate the terms.
If a 14 team CFP had played out this year, it would have eliminated all the subjective nonsense that came with comparing SC, AL, Ole Miss, Miami, and SMU. Something like the following would have resulted, which would have created an opportunity to settle this season’s questions on the field.
- Oregon
- Georgia
- PSU
- Texas
- ND
- Indiana
- Boise State
- OSU
- Tenn / SC
- SMU (ACC reg champion)
- ASU (Big12 reg champion)
- AL / Ole Miss
- ISU/Colorado
- Miami / Clemson
